Welcome to our Web site about the Upper Dearne woodlands.  We will tell you about the woods, what you can hope to see there.  We will also tell you what the group are doing to look after the woods, both for the benefit of the plants and animals to be found there, and also for people visiting.  The woods are open to the public every day of the year, but only if you are on foot.  There is no access for wheeled vehicles, but we hope to make some limited access for wheelchairs where the terrain allows in the future.

Activities for April/May 2019

Two working parties are planned for the coming month:-

Sunday, 14 April, 10.00am. Remove brambles beside north and south paths in Upper Stephen Wood, together with cleaning and oiling the information panel at the top of the vicarage steps. Wear sturdy boots and gloves. Meet at the top of Greenwood Lane.

Sunday, 5 May 10.00am. Refix the waymark post beside the Greenwood Lane steps, fix new half-round capping to the waterfall balustrade and carry out localised vegetation management. Wear sturdy gloves and boots. Meet on site.

 

The next meeting of the Upper Dearne Woodlands Conservation Group will take place in Birdsedge Church Hall on Tuesday, 14 May at 7.30 pm. All are welcome

Activities for March/April 2019

Two working parties are planned for the coming month:- 

Sunday, 17 March, 10.00am. Removing silt mound adjoining the stepping stones, cleaning Dave Newman’s bench and vegetation management in the surrounding areas (This is the task postponed from 10 March). Wear sturdy boots and gloves. Meet at the top of Greenwood Lane. 

Sunday, 24 March 10.00am. Forming a path on Turpin Hill and clearing tree roots remaining from last year’s activities. Wear sturdy gloves and boots. Meet on site. 


The next meeting of the Upper Dearne Woodlands Conservation Group will take place in Birdsedge Church Hall on Tuesday, 9 April at 7.30 pm. All are welcome 

Activities for February-March 2019

Two working parties are planned for the coming month:-

Sunday, 24 February, 10.00am. Repairs to one final section of the revetment above the learning tree, cleaning remaining charring from the Raking steps bench and further holly management. Wear sturdy boots and gloves. Meet at the top of Greenwood Lane.

Sunday, 10 March, 10.00am. Removing silt mound adjoining the stepping stones, cleaning Dave Newman’s bench and vegetation management in the surrounding areas. Wear sturdy boots and gloves. Meet at the top of Greenwood Lane.

Activities for Jan/Feb 2019

Two working parties are planned for the coming month:-

Sunday, 13 January, 10.00am. Repairs to the revetment above the learning tree. Also holly management in the same area. Wear sturdy boots and gloves. Meet at the top of Greenwood Lane.

Sunday, 3 February, 10.00am. Repairs to the bench on the ride in Green Wood. Also holly management in the same area. Wear sturdy boots and gloves. Meet at the top of Greenwood Lane.

 

The next meeting of the Upper Dearne Woodlands Conservation Group will take place in Birdsedge Church Hall on Tuesday, 12 February 2019 at 7.30 pm. All are welcome

Happy Christmas- and activities for Dec 2018/ Jan 2109

6 January, 10.00am. A walk around the woods to assess the range of tasks to be included in the Schedule for the coming year and to review the previous year’s Schedule. Meet at the top of Greenwood Lane.

The next meeting, which will include the AGM will take place in the Church Hall on Tuesday, 8 January, 2019 at 7.30 pm.  All are welcome. Nominations, please for officers.

Activities for November/December 2018

Sunday, 25 November, 10.00 am. Clearing the Vicarage steps in Stephen Wood and the raking steps in Green Wood, including any necessary repairs. Wear sturdy boots and gloves. Please bring a long-handled brush if possible. Meet at the top of Greenwood Lane.

Sunday, 9 December, 10.00 am. Repairs to the bench supports on the northern path (the ride) in Green Wood and further path clearing as necessary. Wear sturdy boots and gloves. Meet at the top of Greenwood Lane.

 

The next meeting of the Upper Dearne Woodlands Conservation Group will take place in the Church Hall on Tuesday, 11 December at 7.30 pm. when mince pies and mulled wine will be on offer – not to be missed!  All are welcome.
