Welcome to our Web site about the Upper Dearne woodlands.  We will tell you about the woods, what you can hope to see there.  We will also tell you what the group are doing to look after the woods, both for the benefit of the plants and animals to be found there, and also for people visiting.  The woods are open to the public every day of the year, but only if you are on foot.  There is no access for wheeled vehicles, but we hope to make some limited access for wheelchairs where the terrain allows in the future.

Happy Christmas- and activities for Dec 2018/ Jan 2109

6 January, 10.00am. A walk around the woods to assess the range of tasks to be included in the Schedule for the coming year and to review the previous year’s Schedule. Meet at the top of Greenwood Lane.

The next meeting, which will include the AGM will take place in the Church Hall on Tuesday, 8 January, 2019 at 7.30 pm.  All are welcome. Nominations, please for officers.

Activities for November/December 2018

Sunday, 25 November, 10.00 am. Clearing the Vicarage steps in Stephen Wood and the raking steps in Green Wood, including any necessary repairs. Wear sturdy boots and gloves. Please bring a long-handled brush if possible. Meet at the top of Greenwood Lane.

Sunday, 9 December, 10.00 am. Repairs to the bench supports on the northern path (the ride) in Green Wood and further path clearing as necessary. Wear sturdy boots and gloves. Meet at the top of Greenwood Lane.

 

The next meeting of the Upper Dearne Woodlands Conservation Group will take place in the Church Hall on Tuesday, 11 December at 7.30 pm. when mince pies and mulled wine will be on offer – not to be missed!  All are welcome.

Activities for October/November 2018

Sunday, 21 October, 10.00 am. Raking and collecting grass on Turpin Hill. Bring a grass rake if possible. Meet on site. (NB. this activity dependant on site conditions and may be changed at short notice)

Sunday, 4 November, 10.00 am. Clearing and repairing raking steps in Green Wood. Wear sturdy boots and gloves. Meet at the top of Greenwood Lane.

The next meeting of the Upper Dearne Woodlands Conservation Group will take place in Birdsedge Church Hall on Tuesday, 13 November at 7.30 pm. All are welcome.

Activities for Sept/Oct 2018

 

The following working parties are planned:- 

Saturday, 15 September. Silt clearance in the pond area. Wear wellies or sturdy boots and suitable gloves. Meet at the top of Greenwood Lane. 

Sunday, 30 September. Further silt clearance in the pond area (if conditions are unsuitable for pond work, the activity will transfer to carrying out repairs to the raking steps in Green Wood). 

 The next meeting of the Upper Dearne Woodlands Conservation Group will take place in Birdsedge Church Hall on Tuesday, 9 October at 7.30 pm. All are welcome.

Activities for Aug/Sept 2018

The following working parties are planned:- 

Sunday, 26 August and Sunday, 2 September, 10.00am. 

In both cases, work will focus on silt clearance in the pond area, together with vegetation clearance to the Vicarage path.

Wear wellies or sturdy boots and suitable gloves. Meet at the top of Greenwood Lane.

Activities for July/August 2018

The following working parties are planned:- 

Sunday, 22 July, 10.00am. Further holly sapling clearance in Stephen Wood and completion of repairs to the stile at the junction with Greenwood Lane. Wear sturdy boots and suitable gloves. Meet at the top of Greenwood Lane. 

Sunday 5 August, 10.00am. If the ground has softened sufficiently by rain, we will cull creeping thistles from Turpin Hill.  Alternatively we will be cutting back hollies in Green Wood.  In either case, wear sturdy boots and suitable gloves and meet at the top of Greenwood Lane. 

 The next meeting of the Upper Dearne Woodlands Conservation Group will take place in Birdsedge Church Hall on Tuesday, 14 August at 7.30 pm. All are welcome. 

Activities for June/July 2018

The following working parties are planned:-

Sunday, 24 June, 10.00am. (NB. This date supercedes the23 June date advised in the May minutes) Work on Turpin Hill forming a pathway and removing brambles. Sturdy footwear and suitably thorn proof gloves are advised. Meet on site

Saturday, 30 June, 10.00am. Holly sapling clearance in Upper Stephen Wood and repairs to the stile at the junction with Greenwood Lane Wear sturdy boots and suitable gloves. Meet at the top of Greenwood Lane.
