Welcome to our Web site about the Upper Dearne woodlands.  We will tell you about the woods, what you can hope to see there.  We will also tell you what the group are doing to look after the woods, both for the benefit of the plants and animals to be found there, and also for people visiting.  The woods are open to the public every day of the year, but only if you are on foot.  There is no access for wheeled vehicles, but we hope to make some limited access for wheelchairs where the terrain allows in the future.

Activities for March/April 2023

Working Parties

Sunday, 26 March, 10.00 am. Sowing remaining wildflower seeds at western end of Burn Wood and planting oak saplings in the same area. Completion of the dry stone wall repair in Upper Stephen Wood. Wear suitable boots and gloves, bring rake, spade own refreshments. Meet at the top of Greenwood Lane.

Pencil in a further date, 16 April ,tasks to be agreed at the next meeting.

Sunday, 5 March, 10.00 am. Setting wildflower seeds in Upper Stephen Wood. Wear gloves and boots suitable for the type of work. Meet at the top of Greenwood Lane. Bring a fork, rake and own refreshments.

Pencil in a further date, 26 March. Tasks to be agreed at the next meeting.

Sunday, 22, January, 10.00 am.  The annual walkover to assess the range of Management Tasks for the coming year. Meet at the top of Greenwood Lane (HD8 8NN) and bring own refreshments.

Sunday, 5 February, 10.00 am. Details to be arranged but possibly dry stone wall repairs. Meet at the top of Greenwood Lane (HD8 8NN) and bring own refreshments.

Activities for Dec 2022/Jan 2023

Weather warning—Because the forecast is bad for 18th December, we will cancel the working party.

Instead we will plant the trees on 8 January and have tghe walkover on the 22 January.

Sunday 18th December, 10 am.

Completeing the planting of the remaining trees. Wear gloves and boots suitable for the work. Meet top of Greenwood lane and bring spade and own refreshments.NB. The advance weather forecast is not promusing so chek emails the previous evening.

Sunday 8th January 10 am.

Annual walkover to assess management tasks for the coming year. Meet top of Greenwood lane and bring own refreshments. NB. If tree planting has not been possible on 18 Decemnber, this will take precedence, in which case bring a spade and suitable hand and foot wear.

Pencil in a furthrer date of 22 January for the annual walkover, if it had to be postponed, or another activity which will be decided at the January meeting.

Next Meeting. At the Church hall on Tuesday 10th January at 7;30.

Sunday, 13 November, 10.00 am. Bramble clearance in Upper Stephen Wood. Wear gloves and boots suitable for the type of work. Meet at Turpin Hill and bring a fork and own refreshments.

Sunday, 4 December, 10.00 am. Tree planting. Wear gloves and boots suitable for the activity. Meet at the top of Turpin Hill and bring a spade and own refreshments.

Future Working parties and activities

A working party is planned on Sunday, 23 October, 10.00 am, when the installation of the Turpin Hill gate will be completed. Additionally, subject to the numbers available, bramble clearance in Upper Stephen Wood. Wear gloves and boots suitable for the type of work. Meet at Turpin Hill and bring own refreshments.

In addition, please note the following advance dates:-

Sunday, 13 November . Working party. Activity to be agreed at next meeting.

Sunday, 4 December . Tree planting day. Includes assistance from the Ten Villages Group.

Activities for September/October 2022

Future Working Parties: Setting up the gate on Turpin Hill will be arranged once the accessories are in place, but is likely to be early/mid October.

The working party provisionally set for Sunday 25th has been moved to Tuesday 27th. The task will be to tidy up the fallen beech bough at the bottom of the raking steps. Meet at usual place at 10.00am.

Working Parties

Sunday, 29 May,10.00am Modification to ground surface levels at southern flank of Greenwood Lane waterfall to reduce risk of storm water flowing down Stephen Wood footpath. 

Sunday 26 June,10 am Mending some of the fence between the woods and the gas board track.

Meet at the top of Greenwood Lane. Wear sturdy gloves and boots. Bring spade or shovel etc and own refreshments.

Sunday, 24 April ,10.00am Burn Wood. Repairing the muddy area of the path beyond the
top of the raking steps, involving scraping off mud and replacing with stones where possible.
Checking raking steps and repairing as necessary.
Meet at the top of Greenwood Lane. Wear sturdy gloves and boots. Bring own refreshments.
